Realistic Fiction

October 22, 2009:
Choose one of the following to answer.

  1. What about this book said, "Read Me!" Was it the topic? summary? author? other special features? Describe why you chose this book.
  2. Answer this question from the main character's point of view. "The question on everyone's mind is: What TV show, movie, or book is most similar to the story you are in?"

October 20, 2009:
Please answer both of the following questions:
  1. Describe the setting of your book thus far. Is this a place that made you think, "I've been there," or "I'd love to go there," or "No way would you ever catch me at this place"? Discuss your connections and feelings about the setting, explaining how you relate (or do not relate) to the place your story is taking place.
  2. Think about yesterday's class discussion where we discussed the various properties of specific genres. For example, we said that fantasy books deal with talking animals or the use of magic. So far, what characteristics of your book prove to you that it is, in fact, a Realistic Fiction novel?

  1. The book that I am currently reading is Rainy by Sis Deans. In the beginning of my book, The main character, Rainy, has to go to a summer camp. I would love to go to this summer camp because the book said that it had a huge lake and was woody. I loved going camping with my sisters and nephews and the book described it just how it looked like when
    I went.
My book shows that it is realistic fiction by situations that happen, such as someone going to summer camp, could really happen in real life. I know that myself and some of my friends go to summer camp. There is also a part in my book where Rainy was walking on a fence and one of the camp councilers ran by and yelled at her and the same thing happened to my when I went away to camp. So far, I am really connecting to my book.

  2. I'm reasding the book Framed by Frank Cottrell Boyce. The setting is an extrmely small town near Wales, England. I would not want to live there because the main character Dylan is the only boy in the whole town and it is very boring.
In the book thuis family is seen running a small auto shop and convient store. This could happen anywhere around the world so it is definetely a realistic fiction book.

  3. The name of my book is "Alone In Wolf Hollow" written by Dana Brookins. This book is about two little kids who loose their mother, and in search of their uncle they find themsleves in the middle of a homicide-and face to face with a murderer. This could happen anywhere in the world so it's a relistic fiction book.

  4. My book i'm reading is "Heart of a Champion" by Carl Deuker. My setting takes place in a community out in San Francisco, Claifornia. I would love to visit San Francisco because of the good weather there. Also i want to go see Giants stadium where Bary Bonds broke the home run record. In this book they're two kids playin and practicing baseball all summer which any baseball player that wants to be good would do.

  5. The book i'm reading is Storm Catchers by Tim Bowler. No one will ever meet me at this place because of what i've read so far,the setting doesn't really say anything but i think if i continue reading i will maybe get to like the place. The story is taking part in this creepy manner because Ella who is thirteen is taking care of her baby sister Sam and whiles she's taking care of her she hears noises from upstairs which is making her nervous and decides to check it out.I'm not really sure what the Realistic Fiction is now and hope i would find one but now i think it's the creepy noise upstairs because if you are living in an ancient house i predict that's the same noise you will hear or something similar to it.

  6. The book I have is Crank by Ellen Hopkins. The setting is in Albequrque, New Mexico. I would hate to go there because the main character describes the area as extremely hot, and I despise hot weather. She says the pavement is cracked and heat rises off it, and the air smells like oil. It doesn't seem like a very nice place to be.
I know my book is realistic fiction because the main character, Kristina, goes to visit her dad for the first time in 8 years and ends up falling in love with a hooligan and getting addicted to drugs. This could easily happen in reality! Any girl could be taken advantage of and have her life spiral down. I really enjoy how the author conveys Kristina's feelings. She portrays her in a very real style, showing how hard it is to really battle addiction and how drugs really change your personality.

  8. The book I am reading is called "Kissing the Rain" by Kevin Brooks. The setting right now is on a bridge near Moulton (it doesn't say what state). I dont really have an opinion on this place. It is kind of plain and dull, nothing special. I wouldn't really mind being there. There is one point in his retelling of a murder that I would love to see. A CAR CHASE! I might even like to see the fighting part, it would be kind of exciting to watch but I would NOT want to see the murder.
The events that have happened so far could actually happen in real life and, well, I am not sure where the setting is exactly but I suspect it's a real place.

  9. The setting in my book, Rainy, is such a peaceful, serene area. At one of the beaches, it over looks this clear, sky blue and I can just picture it being so quiet and peaceful. It would feel good to be away from all the ambulence sirens that I hear. It's like everyday when my mom and I are trying to come home from school, there has been an accident and we always have to take a detour. It gets really annoying, but being in such a serene place would be like meeting the Jonas Brothers (for me). I would absalutly LOVE to go to a summer camp where it is so quiet.

  10. This book when I fis picked it up said"Read Me" because it had a picture of a beach on the front. I have always loved beaches and I thought I could really connect with the book.
I would say that the movie that my book connects to the most is Camp Rock. I think this because in the movie, Mitchie is trying to fit in with everyone but the only person that accepts her is a girl that isn't in the same cabin as her, much like Rainy. Mitchie is also like Rainy in the way that she acts around different people. They both try to fit in with the girls in their cabin by telling lies and mixing around their stories every time they retell them.

  11. October 20:
    1. The Setting of my book is a private school in Arizonia. Apparently it is a really good school, it is a boy and girl private school. But you wouldnt ever catch me at this private school because you would have to wear school uniforms, and follow a strict dress code. And there is no way i could wear a school uniform every single day of the week.
    2. My book proves that it is an actual Realistic Fiction Novel because it talks about things that happen in everyday lives. Such as the fact they go to a private middle school. The fact that there really can be student and teacher sexual relationships. And that somewhere in the world there are kids who are abused.

    1. The main reason i chose this book was because the title "friction" got me wondering what it ment. And then the summary on the back cover of the book told me that it was about student-teacher relationships, and at first i wasn't sure what it ment. Untill i continued reading the summary when it told me that it was also about sexual abuse, and at that time i knew what it ment by student-teacher relationships.
    2. If Alex could answer the question she would say, "the movie would be Taken. It would be this movie because the movie is about a girl theat gets taken and abused. And that is what happend to me, only it was my nice teacher who took me and no one knew about i texcept for me.

  13. 1. What attracted me to the book"Tears of a Tiger"by Sharon M. Draper, was that it was the first book of the Hazel-Wood High Trilogy. I read the 2nd book called"Forged by Fire" the last time we did the project but the book was so good that I wanted to read the book that came before it. So far so good for the 1st book. It is so emotional, suspenseful and calm at the same time. {if there were only a word for that lol :D}

  14. What drew to continue reasing the book frasmed was the beginning of the story. It starts out with the auto shop being robbed which was very exciting. Then the main character Dylan says that stealing is now the "family business". This hooked me because I can't wait to see how that comes into play. His sister Marie also starts to collect info on famous criminals.

  15. I think everything about my book screams "Read meeeee!". The whole plot is really intense. It follows a girl who is completely happy and normal and shows how her life crumbles quickly as she dabbles in drugs and hooks up with the wrong crowd. The intimate details the author shares really shines a light on the darkness of addiction. Plus, the book is set up in poem-form, so the words flow and make the story super pretty. I've read other books by the author, and all of them impress me. I look forward to the ending of my book. I doubt I'll be disappointed.

  16. I chose to read this book because of the topic. The summary, too, in a way. It is about a boy who happened to witness a murder and everyone is botheringhim to find out the truth of what really happened. The thing is that he was bullied before this because he is fat and he called it being "rained on" which hints the title "Kissing the Rain". Just the fact that the book is about a murder is was drawed me to pick it.

  17. My book also said read me because in the summary, it starts to tell how Rainy is dealing with having ADHA. I can connect to this by I know someone that also has ADHA. I see how he has to deal with it and like this things he can't have or have too much of like soda. He has to take pills that keep him concentrated and calm. In the book, one of the girls at camp tells Rainy she should be on pills(same pills the kid I know is on).

  18. The setting of my book is in seattle close to the space needle were the main character lives.I would like to live there because I would like to see the space needle but the main character cant because he has cerebal palsy and cant move

  19. My book is "Dreamland" by sarah dessen. The setting in my book is a small town. I wouldn't want to live in this type of setting because everyone knows everyone and I dont like to deal with gossip, and if something bad happens everyone would probably know fast. I can somewhat relate because delaware is kind of a small state, so people know a lot but its not like everyone knows EVERYTHING!

Based on the discussion about generes, i can tell that my book is realistic fiction. I know this because all the events that have happened so far is normal stuff that would happen in real life. For example, in my book the main charectes, caitlns, sister ran away from home, and that can really happen. Nothing not realistic has happened, like talking animals in fantasy, and aliens in sci-fiction.

  20. The movie i feel is most like my book is the "Rockie". I say that because during that movie the coach is a really good ball player who is coaching a team who are terrible. But over time they get better and better and end up winning the championship. Well during my book The coach for my time is a profesional ball player, and he starts out with a bad team but hpefully over time they will get better.

My book im reading is "Dreamland" by Sarah Dessen. The thing about my book that said "read me!" is the topic. I read the back of my book and it was about her when she first meets her future boyfriend, which later on becomes abusive, and the back of the book seemed very intese, and it really dragged me in the book.

I think a movie similar to the book im in is, something where your perfect sibling ends up disapearing, and then your life going down hill because she/he ran away. I couldnt really think of a movie/ book, because there is so many crazy events that can happen in this book that i dont think any movie or book (besides this one obviously) can be put in place of this book.

  22. I can make a connection with my book. When I went to camp, not many people were there that I knew but once i made friends, it was a lot of fun. It's hard to make friends when you're quiet like me. Rainy, on the other hand, just goes up and talks to random people. I would not do that because then you would end up as the weird kid that nobody likes.
