Historical Fiction

October 22, 2009:
Choose one of the following to answer.

  1. What about this book said, "Read Me!" Was it the topic? summary? author? other special features? Describe why you chose this book.
  2. Answer this question from the main character's point of view. "The question on everyone's mind is: What TV show, movie, or book is most similar to the story you are in?"

October 20, 2009:
Please answer both of the following questions:

  1. Describe the setting of your book so far. Is this a place that made you think, "I've been there," or "I'd love to go there," or "No way would you ever catch me at this place"? Discuss your connections and feelings about the setting, explaining how you relate (or do not relate) to where your story is taking place.
  2. Think about yesterday's class discussion where we talked about the various properties of specific genres. For example, we said that fantasy books deal with talking animals or the use of magic. So far, what characteristics of your book prove to you that it is, in fact, a Historical Fiction novel?

  1. So far in my book Fever, the setting is in Philadelphia, 1793. Iwould never in a million years want to visit there! As of now, the main character has described that where she resides, the ceiling is so low that she hits her head when waking up in a fright. The are dieseases and people getting sick and falling ill everywhere.. definetly not a place to travel to for a nice vacation. I cannot even begin to imagine living in such cramped quarters such as that. Especially when the setting is so close to home. So far, this proves to be a historical fiction for me because i can tell that this is set in a real place and time and that an epidemic is close since a girl has just passed away from a fever and many others are rumored to be sick or in bed. This book so far has proved to be very intriguing.

  3. So far, the setting of my book, "The Journal of Brian Doyle," takes place in the year of 1874, on a boat that goes by the name of Florence. The setting of this book is definately a place that you would find me, because I love to take calm, relaxing boat rides, (they can be a little bumpy). I can relate to this setting because I took a couple of fishing trips this past summer with my uncle on his boat. Yes, this setting is a place where you would find me. Some characteristics of this book tell me that it is historical fiction are the dates, the black and white photos, and the fact that the people are immigrants being shipped to the United States. I wonder what it's like to be an immigrant.

  4. The setting of my book is mideveil( did I spell that right?)Japan, a long time ago. The setting of this book made me feel No way you would ever catch me at this place because there ae people who think they are better han the peasants there, and they cut peasants' heads of for fun or when peasants look at them funny.
The facts that prove that my book is a historical fiction are that; 1. It takes place years ago, like in the 1000 A.D.'s. 2. The characters in my story are fiction and so is the story's plot.

  8. The setting of Duchessina takes place in the 16th century in Europe (mostly Italy, Rome, and France). A time of kings and queens. Also the time of a wealthy and powerful family called the Medici. There are beautiful castles, bloody wars, terrible diseases, and hateful people. During a time like that, I wouldn't think of going but at some points, it would've been interesting to see how characters such as Catarina Medici should've lived a splendid life and not living with nuns who despise her family and would do anything to make her life terrible.

  9. The book i'm reading (well, already finished) is Duchessina. The name itself caught my attention since for this type of genre,I like reading and learning about the history of women. Especially the royal ones. I've never read a story about a duchess so it made me even more curious. The topic was about a girl who lives in Italy and is the most wealthiest and envied of all. I've never heard of the author but her other books seem interesting since they also deal with other royalty and artists. The front cover of the book was another one to look at since it had the words 'young royals' and it showed a wealthy looking one.

  10. Some interesting details about my book that made me want to read this thrilling installment was well first of all, the cover. I know you're not supposed to judge a book by it's cover but when i laid eyes on this one, i knew there was something different about it. The cover page shows the face of a girl with the whites of her eyes a disturbing shade of yellow. Later on, you learn that this is because the book focuses on a time period where yellow fever is causing close to an epidemic in Philadelphia during the late 1700's and yellow eyes are the most common sign.

  11. I chose the book Dark Water Rising because it seemed interesting talking about a boy, Seth, who wanted to be a carpenter but his father wants him to become a doctor. So they move to Galveston, Texas because there are better colleges in Texas, but when things seem to be good to be true there was a storm warning that occures. This summary grabbed my attention and built some suspense toward reading this book.

  13. Nothing about my book said "Read Me" other than the fact that it was the only book i could find that wasn't set in Modern Times. All the others had more words than the dictionary.

I'd never be caught on this deserted island my characters have shipwrecked on for more reasons than one. First, i'm probably never getting on another ship for more than a day again. Last time I did, the sea was acting all strange, and the water was clear. It was like the ocean was dead. There were aboslutely no waves. The entire water was dead still aside from the tide. Not even those little mini two foot waves you sometimes see. Then, the water was this extremely weird shade of cyan. But now i'm just rambling.

The features my book has to do with Historical Fiction is the setting. The book is set in 1812, about a family trying to escape oppression and unfair rule by sailing on a ship.

  15. The thing about my book that said "Read Me", was the front cover. The fornt cover has pictures of a ship, waves, and poeple with spears to catch whales with. Also the title of the book got my attention by it being a journal of the persons time on this whaling ship. It caught my attention because it is a biography, and I like to read about people
